Tama-Hokubu Medical Center sees only patients who have scheduled appointments by referral.*
* What Does "Mandatory Appointment by Referral" Mean?
Except in emergency cases, the hospital sees only patients who have been referred by their primary care physician or a local medical institution. A "primary care physician" is an accessible practitioner whom one can readily consult on matters related to health and illness, and from whom one seeks care when unwell. When a primary care physician determines that high-precision lab tests or more advanced treatments are needed, he or she refers the patient to a hospital with more advanced medical capabilities, or to a specialist hospital. When a referral to a specialist hospitals or the like is needed, the primary care physician drafts a letter of referral (patient referral document) describing the details of the diagnosis, and gives it to the patient. The patient then schedules an appointment with the referred hospital, and present the letter of referral on the initial visit. This system is called "mandatory appointment by referral."
